Demon’s Souls

Ancient Beings

So, here it is, the game that started one of the most respected franchises in modern gaming, and it nearly never happened. From Software had lost faith in it and simply wanted to get it out the door to die at retail. In steps Hidetaka Miyazaki, at the time a fresh face with the company who convinced them to let him take over the project reasoning that as they already expected a failure then what different would it make if he couldn’t turn it around. Once completed the game launched to critical acclaim but poor sales. Word of mouth got around though that if you stuck with it it would all be worth it. Sales steadily increased and the rest is history.

In Demon’s Souls you play as 1 of 10 character classes who travel to the kingdom of Boletaria and enters a mysterious fog that has enveloped the land. At the start you’re taught that this isn’t going to be an easy ride and new players can expect to be beat down in seconds by the tutorials boss. Kill or not in the end you’ll soon be sent to the Nexus in soul form and it’s here you meet the Maiden in Black and learn of your mission to rid the land of demons and defeat the Old One to save the kingdom. This is where it really gets going and it’s time to git gud.

Keep Coming Back

After a brief time you’ll have access to 5 areas which you travel killing demons and gathering souls. Souls as anybody who’s played a Souls game knows are the lifeblood of everything you do. They are needed for buying equipment, upgraded gear and leveling up your character. Souls are thus a precious commodity, die however and you drop the lot with only one chance to get them back, die again before you get to them and they’re gone for good with all your hard work undone.

Now the general gist is out the way does the game still stand up today. In short, yes, but only if you can get over a few hurdles regarding odd design choices. Combat here is very methodical and precise and choosing the right weapon is important. Shame then that the weapon stat menus are a nightmare of numbers and symbols. Instead of just stating strength or dexterity they use symbols which mean nothing at first till you get your head round it.

Once you do though you’ll settle on the weapons you like and it’ll stop being a problem at all and you can fully enjoy the excellent combat. Another very odd choice to me is what’s called world tendency. This affects each of the separate areas individually and changes dependant on how well you’re doing. Stay alive and slaughter bosses and start changing to white but die in body form and it’ll start changing to black where baddies will become harder but drop better loot. The main problem with world tendency is that if you’re online it goes off the server average of how everybody is doing. As finding certain weapons and little events are dependant on the world tendency being one or the other it means you may never get them as the server average just isn’t what you need.

Bonfire of Hope

It seems From Software where aware of these issues and their unpopularity as both the odd menu symbols and world tendency were both dropped for other Souls games. Otherwise this is still a fantastic game with locations that beg to be explored with many secrets to discover and enemies to battle. Combat here is fantastic being deliberate and slow but challenging, punishing you for any small mistake you make. Bosses will take you to your limit and make you question whether you can defeat them. With practice you will and the satisfaction gained from each victory is immense. And that in the end is what this is all about. Struggle and eventual sweet victory.

Overall I’d still recommend this game but you’ll need patience not just due to difficulty but because of the fact it’s even less user friendly to beginners that needs to be.

PROS

  • Great interesting locations that beg to be explored.
  • Combat is tough and challenging, but for all the right reasons.
  • Great boss fights (for the most part).

CONS

  • Very confusing weapon menus.
  • Poorly explained, world tendency mechanic.
  • Rather short compared to the games that followed.

Verdict

8/10

A Low Area Between Hills

Hello again folks, a quick question for you. What’s your comfort zone? What’s your safe gaming space? Is it driving games? Or maybe it’s a military shooter. We all have 1 or 2 genre’s we’re more comfortable with over any other. For me it’s an immersion filled adventure game. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that what I thought was just a simple ‘walking simulator’ was much more engrossing than I imagined it would be.

You play an explorer setting out to find the seed of life and gain fame and fortune. Armed with not much beyond discount canoeing lessons and your determination you head out to find your fortune. Alas the discount canoeing lessons were beyond useless and as soon we are in control we’ve crashed and are pulling ourselves out the water at the mouth of a cave. Exploring further you emerge in the titular valley and start making some strange discoveries.

What are the floating orbs of light, the little sprite like creatures and most importantly the exo-suit you find by an overturned World War 2 army truck. Well, the last one is easy, that’s the L.E.A.F suit. Capable of endowing it’s user with great speed, jumping capabilities and the power to give or take life as you see fit. Delving deeper into the valley you discover a secret WW2 research base that hides more than a few secrets.

Ramble On

Starting out like a simple ‘walking simulator’ and then becoming something of a First Person platformer it then morphs again into an engrossing adventure with light shooter elements. At first I really wasn’t sure about it, it doesn’t take long at all for it to introduce the platforming elements and thankfully despite the first person viewpoint they are rather enjoyable. I however couldn’t shame the feeling it felt like the game wasn’t really going anywhere.

But as more plot details emerge and your overall mission becomes clear it grew on me more and more until I really wanted to see it through to the end. I wanted to know the fates of various characters and found its handling and explanation of player death to be rather clever and actually fit with the fiction of the game.

Often With a River Running Through It

Your enjoyment is also helped by the fact that while most elements are kept simple it doesn’t over reach itself or introduce too much unnecessary guff. As you gain upgrades for the L.E.A.F suit traversal becomes more and more of a pleasure as you speed down hills, fling yourself through the air, swing from grapple points and later even run across the surface of water. It never feels clunky and death feels as though you messed up as opposed to be being cheated. They also lead to some exhilarating sequences where you run and ridiculous speeds through tunnels and make huge leaps over chasms.

The shooter elements are kept as basic as can be. One button fires a blast that steals life, one button fires a blast that gives life. Enemies are introduced later but involve nothing more than strafing left or right and getting a few his on target. They pop fairly often but are over quick enough to not show anything down too much.

Various secrets are there to be discovered too. Glowing acorns must be collected to open mysterious magical doors and medallions must be discovered to open different chambers inside a strange pyramid found somewhere in the valley.

Overall I found myself drawn to this more and more as time went on and would recommend it to anybody wanting to try something a little (but not too) different.

PROS

  • Dreaded first person platforming is handled very well.
  • Engrossing story.
  • Surprisingly exciting sequences later on

CONS

  • No real challenge.
  • Combat could have done with a little more variety.

Verdict. 8/10

We Come From The Land Of Ice and Snow

Zombies, they’re everywhere. In movies, games, music videos and books. They’ve rampaged in shopping centres, space, the wild west and they’ve even been in love. But, have they ever been vikings………..well in all honestly they probably have in some cheap straight to dvd movie but not to my knowledge in a game……….well not on PS4. Well here they are in Zombie Vikings, a side scrolling fighter for 1-4 players from the developer of Stick it to the Man.

The adventure kicks off when the trickster god Loki fools Odin and plucks out his remaining magical eye so he can use its magical eye juice to gain more power. Angered by this (obviously) Odin summons 4 undead vikings from their graves and sends them to hunt Loki down. If it all sounds a bit grim then don’t worry as it’s all totally played for laughs.

You then choose from the 4 characters, with a 5th added for free since launch, and head out on your quest. You’ll meet crazy and colourful characters, resolve issues from your past and even explore the innards of a giant snake turned maggot cruise ship.

From The Midnight Sun

Game play itself is very basic you have an attack button, a signature move and the ability to jump and pick up small enemies or items and throw them about. Despite the 5 different characters which you can choose from at the start of each stage they all play the same with only their special moves differing. There are no upgradable combos or moves and no real reason to choose a different viking over another unless you really prefer one special over another. And the same applies to any new swords you collect.

Their are plenty of them but for the most part they feel way too samey and if you’re granted one for completing a side quest your then forced into equipping it straight away. Some stand out as more useful such as one that steals life force or one that causes baddies to explode on death but they are the exception. Also sticking to the done very basically formula are the side quests.

They can be found on most stages by discovering an NPC hidden off the beaten path who’ll instruct you to find an item and bring it back to then but some are so basic it’s insulting. In one I didn’t even have to move, just leap, attack a hanging pinata and BOOM, free sword.

While one needed snow to build a snowman despite it being a snow covered stage I could only collect specific lumps of snow. After a while I just started to ignore them all together.

Hot Springs Blow

What does fair better though is the humour and the odd and crazy situations you find yourself in and that’s what carried me through the game to be honest. From playing in a gnome flinging sport to regain team honour to actually fighting the North Sea the game throws plenty of silly situations at you but in the end due to the game’s basic and repetitive nature I doubt it’ll stick in the memory for long and I won’t be devoting time towards a second play.

PROS

  • Funny storyline and dialogue.
  • Full of crazy and silly situations.

CONS

  • Combat and side quests are way too basic.
  • Not enough difference between characters or equipment.
  • Boss fights too easy.

Loneliness

Here’s a question, how much emphasis do you put on story over action? Would you rather everything just exploded in a hail of bullets or would you rather simply enjoy some lovely atmospherics and character interaction. If you prefer the latter than this is likely something you’ll enjoy.

Due to a past catastrophe killing all crew but yourself you play as a lone cosmonaut on a space colony seemingly simply killing time, however a deadly storm is approaching and you must now plan your escape using the escape pod. However you didn’t attend escape pod repair school (not a real thing) and thus have no clue how to get it moving.

At this point the colonies A.I steps in and purposes the idea of uploading the backed up data of several of the old colonists who know what to do into the holographic chamber so you can meet them and learn what they know and get the parts they say you’ll need.

Point and Click

This all boils down to a daily routine of traveling out to scavenge for parts and supplies in the destroyed buildings through the day and meeting up with the holograms at night to discuss the days events and learn more about them and their personal stories. Occasionally you can spend some extra time with a selected hologram to further cement the bonds of friendship.

The game is presented in the ever popular pixelated style but still manages to create a good atmosphere. Gameplay is reminiscent of a simple point and click with a handful of password style puzzles thrown in to keep you thinking. Sadly though gameplay is a little too simple with no real challenge but the well written story and the daily in game routine that strangely becomes compelling carries out through.

PROS

  • Well written story Characters you care about.
  • Good atmosphere despite simple graphics.

CONS

  • Maybe too simple
  • Too easy.

Agent Starling

In Virginia you play as FBI Agent Anne Tarver taking on her first case investigating a missing persons case in the rural town of Kingdom in Virginia. You’re accompanied by the more experienced Maria Halpern who your also asked to keep an eye on as their is an internal investigation going on into her.

The problem is you have no say at all in what happens during either of the main plot points. I’ve never really played any of the visual novel games but from what I understand they usually have choices to be made and branching plot lines from said choices. This is more like an interactive fever dream or an episode of Twin Peaks with all it’s dialogue removed. With no dialogue there is no real explanation to anything going on, some people love coming up with own theories to what is going on. I don’t, at least not when things are THIS obtuse. I kept playing in the vain hope it would reveal it’s secrets and make more sense in the end. It didn’t and I was just left confused. VERY CONFUSED!!!

Thats Some Nice Cherry Pie

It’s not all bad though. The editing and scene transitions are done much like a movie or TV show and you’re moved on when the story calls for it not when your done exploring a location or spoken to everybody 10 times in the hope of new info. At first its very jarring but once you get used to it out starts to really help with the atmosphere. And that’s another thing, while the game makes little sense the atmosphere is really good and that can count for quite a bit with dream sequences, trippy hallucinations and other odd visual sequences. One last thing, the soundtrack is incredible, creating a real sense of dread, hope or the building up of emotion to a major moment.

In the end though the plus points aren’t enough for me to recommend it unless you like the rather unexplained nature of this kind of thing.

PROS

  • Great atmosphere
  • Fantastic soundtrack

CONS

  • No explanation to anything.
  • Story would be much stronger with the use of dialogue.

Tub Thumbin’

Up it rises again from the depths, the unrelenting demonic head which only gets more powerful with each defeat you deal it. It’s a good job your little space beetle is equally unrelenting and tenacious, forging ever onward through all the game throws at you. It certainly helps that the control system is kept simple, 1 analogue stick and 1 button are all you need to navigate all the turns, timed pads, hoops and jumps coming your way.

Bouncing Boom Boom

To be honest I’ve never really been into the whole rhythm action games before. I only settled on this one due to a combination of wanting to build a decent collection of VR titles quickly, and to justify my PSVR purchase, along with it being described as “Rhythm Violence” as opposed to action and it was cheap. I suspected it would probably last me an hour or 2 before I move on to shoot something in the face or run some hapless civilian over in another open world game. Several sessions later I’d completed it and with the exception of a few small niggles had enjoyed it thoroughly.

The game does a job of introducing new elements, letting you get your head round them and then throwing something else your way to keep you on your toes. Even adding in a slight twist on things right on the final level.

Dropping The Bass

If you’re playing in VR mode the game looks very trippy, like somebody has sneaked acid into your morning coffee and you suddenly are surrounded by wiggly wobbly arms with a demon head all neon bright. Then when a mini boss or main boss arrive the game takes on a much more menacing tone, with deep reds and the aforementioned demonic head trying to kill you. It’s also worth noting the title looks gorgeous played through the Pro on a 4k display.

Thumper does get marked down for (in my opinion) some stages simply go on for too long and the game is noticeably harder in 2D mode as the camera doesn’t stay as steady and obstacles are on you with much less warning.

However, overall there is much for rhythm game fans (and some non fans in general) to enjoy here and with the introduction of a new game plus mode in the latest update allowing you to attempt it with only 1 life it still has some serious challenge for players of all skill levels to enjoy.

Verdict.

When is a demo disc not a demo disc? Well, to Sony it’s when you make the decision to charge £29.99 for it. Featuring 5 separate experiences, none of which are full games really, this is designed mainly to show off the various features of the VR headset. Some are good and some are frankly crap, all are listed below.

London Heist.

This one is quite good fun. Playing like a corny gangster flick your asked to steal a diamond from some Russian mobsters while your own guys think you’re trying to do a runner with it. This features some great graphics and a couple of good shoot out scenes. Blasting bikes and vans full of criminal’s on the highway is good fun. However, as with most on this disk it’s too short clocking in at under an hour ending with a moral choice concerning characters you’ve not had time to gel with.

Danger Ball.

I’ll admit, I ignored this one for awhile thinking it would be the worst of the bunch but when I finally tried out I was pleasantly surprised. I found it to be a strangely addictive futuristic take on Pong worth loads of added neon. You face off against various opponents each with different specials in the hope of winning the tournament.

Ocean Dive.

Not much can really be said of this one. It’s certainly pleasant to look at and experience once but the total lack of interaction means you’ll only check it out the once. It’s the prefect thing to introduce a friend to VR though.

Scavengers Odyssey.

A rarity on the VR World’s disk. This one actually out stays it’s welcome. Lasting about 2 hours you control a spider mech hopping between chunks of floating space rocks and blasting aliens. The problem is that it only features 3 alien types and 2 weapons. It’s gets old. Fast. This title has also reportedly made many a person sick but I seem to be getting away with VR motion sickness so far.

Street Luge.

The very definition of a lazy game. You’d think hurling down a busy road inches from the ground in VR would be exhilarating. Well when it’s only 1 course but with slight detours to make up 4 courses and you simply phase through traffic instead of having a bone crunching collision it’s just dull. A few different tracks and a proper sense of danger would have really helped.

Verdict.

A mixed bag of titles that in all honesty should have been included with the headset. As it is charging £29.99 is a low blow for those willing to put faith in this new technology.

Batman Arkham VR (PSVR)

Holy Rusted Metal Batman

A question that crops up a lot in the games industry is one of value for money. While titles such as Skyrim and Witcher 3 offer hours upon hours of game play for your pennies, games like Batman Arkham VR offer literally 1-2 hours and then the credits roll. Even at the lowered price point of £15.99 that’s very little game time. Does this mean you should give it a miss? Absolutely not!

Dark Knight Rises

Rocksteady squeeze more cool and effective uses from the VR headset into the short runtime than any other VR titles I’ve played yet. Anybody with an interest in this game is probably already aware of the suit up sequence and it genuinely is a highlight. To say too much of the storyline would be ruining it but it’s safe to say this is extremely dark and mature territory here. The game what other Batman titles have only treated as a secondary thing and places the gameplay firmly on you being the world’s greatest detective rather than beating anybody to a pulp. You’ll reconstruct crime scenes, investigate corpses and solve puzzles flexing Batmans brain rather than his brawn.

During your quest famous faces will pop up in cameos which I won’t ruin here as it’s always fun to see them appear, sometimes right in your face.

Once you’ve blasted through the main game you can start over with added extra of Riddler trophies and optional extra puzzles including rebuilding objects in 3D, batarang target practice and a hidden tile mini game to unlock character models. These give a good reason to play through again and really search the locations.

Caped Crusader

Verdict

The main downside is you really will want the game to be longer and I’ve had to mark down slightly for that but it will hopefully influence other developers to make great longer VR titles.

It’s one of the best ways to feel like The Batman but it is incredibly short. Still, it’s an easy recommendation to Batman fans.

Here They Lie (PSVR)

The Killer Awoke Before Dawn…

What is it exactly you like to see in a good horror game? Is it plenty of visceral blood and gore? Is it the panic of trying to survive and find precious ammo to fight back. Or is it to quite simply be bloody confused and have no clue as to why any and every event is happening? Well, if you’re about to play Here They Lie I certainly hope it’s the last of those 3 options. Here They Lie is a game that simply seems to think that by being trippy, surreal and confusing makes for an atmospheric title. *SPOILER* It doesn’t, it just makes it confusing.

He Put His Boots On…

You start off boarding a train before being whisked off to a pretty much abandoned maze like city to wander aimlessly until you reach the exit. It’s an incredibly boring start to a game that never really picks up in the excitement stakes anyway. From there you move through a red light district, a weird sea of blood and what at first glance could pass as hell.

However your never asked to do anything other than press a single button during the occasional moral choice moment and collect letter and pictures that are then narrated by an amateur sounding cast. Then it’s back to the wandering. So much wandering. Even the seeming big bad doesn’t really get the blood pumping. Coming across as an on fire, giant, very angry businessman (he even had a brief case) who’s missed his connecting train, as long as you turn tail and run he’ll get bored and disappear again.

He Took A Face From An Ancient Gallery…

Being that this was one of the first VR titles I’ve sat down and played helped me stick with it and feeling like you’re in the scene certainly helped some of the more disturbing moments stick in the mind. The aforementioned red light district features some grim imagery and when you can wander the hell scape it’s actually a relief as it’s a splash of colour in an otherwise mainly drab looking black and white game.

More really should have been done to up the excitement and tension. In one scene the main character beats a character to death with a metal bar and then instantly discards. Because of course he would. Not like it hasn’t just proven to be an effective weapon. But that would make too much sense in a game that has no intention of making any sense at all.

And He Walked On Down The Hall.

Verdict. Some people will possibly get a kick out of the surreal/confusing nature of the game. I however stuck with it for the sake of the fact my PSVR wasn’t cheap and I’m going to get my bloody money’s worth from it.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Grey Wolf

When it comes to the key ingredients to a good RPG or Adventure game I like to see the following things, a large open/explorable world, good atmosphere, plenty of side quests and a decent well written story line. Fortunately for the most part Witcher 3 has all of these things in abundance. In the beginning we find our hero Geralt of Rivia searching for his long lost love Yennefer of Vengerburg, a search that takes him to White Orchard to learn more.

It’s this area that acts as a tutorial, teaching you the various elements you’ll come across and how to handle yourself in combat. Despite the fact it’s a tutorial it’s still great fun and this area alone takes 4-5 to see and do everything. After White Orchard the story takes you onto Velen and Novigrad where the game really opens up and it’s here where the scale of the game really hits. If you want to see and do everything here it will take weeks of gaming to get it done. It’s the type of game where completing side quests just reveals more side quests and you can leave the main story line alone for days at a time.

Ard Sign

Unlike many of today’s western RPG’s you don’t get to create a character to adventure about with. You can however develop Geralt in one of three skill trees, melee, magic or alchemy. Sword skills help to deal more sword and crossbow damage and help with melee defence. Magic let’s you develop various basic Witcher spells such as a shield or the ability to blast fire from your hands while alchemy let’s you develop your skills in potion brewing or oils applied to your sword for more damage dealt to various types of enemies. I settled on a resonance spread of the three concentrating slightly more on the magic side of things. I do love being able to set things on fire.

Redania’s Most Wanted

Secondary quests can involve anything from something as simple as retrieving a pan for an old lady or investigating the underground laboratory of a cheese manipulating sorcerer, all however are well written and when needed, humorous. It’s with the Witcher Contracts though that Geralt earns his bread and butter as these are literally his reason for being what he is. A contract will always start the same way, you find the person responsible for posting a notice on a notice board, get the basic details on the job at hand and then thrash out the important details regarding your pay. It’s in these quests more than others that you feel truly like a Witcher, basically becoming a medieval Sherlock Holmes or Batman. Once you have the details from the contract giver you head out to gather clues using your Witcher senses, this will lead to Geralt deducing what your up against and then preparing appropriately for the battle to come. Yet not all end in combat, at times you’ll be asked to make a judgement call on if your intended target should live or die. Did you gather all the clues to know the truth? Either way your decision may come back to haunt you and not everything is black and white in the world of the Witcher. Still, if all the killing and monster slaying gets a bit much theirs always cards.

Fancy a Game of Gwent?

Gwent, what more can be said of this card based mini game. A mini game so good it’s soon to get its own stand alone release. I’ve spent many an hour challenging the various Innkeeps and merchants to a game of Gwent. The rules are simple, 2 players are dealt 10 cards each of varying strength from their chosen faction, they then play their cards over 3 rounds and the person with the highest attack value at the end of each round wins. It’s made more complex and tactical with the inclusion of special cards that buff others or hinder your opponent. Once you start building up a halfway decent deck this really does become one of the most addictive mini games I’ve played and I don’t generally card baser games at all. It’s simple with just the right amount of tactical thought in it.

The Wild Hunt

After you’ve busied yourself with the various optional distractions you might even find time for the story line. Your main objective is finding your lost adoptive daughter Ciri and stopping the Wild Hunt for good. Unfortunately it does have a habit of spinning it’s wheels at times and dragging events out but all in all it develops into a decent quest to save the day. You’ll meet many a well written character during your time including my personal favourite the Bloody Baron and the Crones of Crookback Bog. Some sections of the story really show off what it means to have mature story telling without just resorting to swears and tits, though it has its fair share of them too. By the end who knows what could happen, choices your asked to make go towards shaping what ending you’ll see. I’ve completed the game twice and had two very different outcomes, both good and bad endings for my heroes.

Verdict. With a seemingly endless amount to see and do I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending what I feel is one of the greatest console RPG’s yet.
